Windows and redhat might cost similar regarding the enterprise edition of redhat vs windows xp pro, but the average person would probably just get the normal redhat cds or download the os and install it for pretty much next to nothing. So from this perspective, windows XP is more expensive for a base system than is red hat.

Also, with a Windows system you do have to purchase MS Office to get a suite of products like openoffice which is free with red hat and new linux distros, or at least free to download.

Also with windows, you do have to purchase photoshop and a number of other tools for audio editing, programming, etc. You can get freeware stuff for Windows, but this is usually not as good quality and has less features and less support. So you mostly have to pay if you want good quality tools for windows.

In a simple word: using Linux means to boycott American Corporatism and American products. Microsoft wants to be the McDonald of computer; thus it's just so cool to trash this e-junk as much as everybody in the world today trashes McDonald.

Unfortunately, RedHat is still an American; yet fortunately it can be access freely, thus it somehow has a built-in element that is against the rouge-American capitalism. Moreover, the spirit of RedHat confirms with the spirit of socialistic GPL thus it is not at all a rouge-product; although it is still red.

Today, it's just uncool if you smoke Marlboro, rush for McDonald and other junky American trashy contribution to the world, read Time/Newsweek, watch CNN/Fox garbage, get drunk with Budweiser, and let the American Microsoft fire your computer..., that is primitive.

Somehow it's very cool now to use the Japanese Kondara Linux, or the French Mandrake, or the Chinese RedFlag; use the Norwegian Opera browser, use the German KDE, use the Japanese Ruby, and so on, and so on.

"Linux vs Windows" now is just about choosing between being a rouge-American or a normal member of the world citizen.
