This would indicate that dhclient wasn't running when you issued the
command or conceivably you have some problem with the permissions in
/var/run.  

Was the interface up when you issued the command?

Check with "ps" to see if dhclient is running.  If it's not, bring
up eth0, check that dhclient is running, then issue the "dhclient -r"
which should release the lease and cause dhclient to terminate.
