Since I use KDE on my system. My Canon Powershot S45 was not recognised either. There is a camera viewer in KDE called Kamera which allows the downloading of my photos. But since it wasn't recognised I had to update the kamera program and it's libraries to support my camera. So I found that I also needed to install Gphoto2 and it's libraries which are used by this program to access the camera. You can get gphoto2 from the site below, or do a google search for Gphoto2 http://www.gphoto.net/ Download and install the program and libraries. And you system should see the camera. Check the website to confirm that it will support the camera. Since the gphoto2 update on my system I am now able to download my pic's. Works like a charm. I have not investigated the possibility of being able to mount the memory card in the camera. But that's not really important to me at the moment. I hope it will work for you. So would lsmod output. I see following messages in /var/log/messages: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 2 usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x839/0xa) is not claimed by any active driver. I left the camera home, so I don't have the output of lsmod, but I remember that usb-storage, sd_mod, sg modules are loaded.
