the only thing in Brian's notes that I have not really looked at is the following:

>alias sound emu10k1
>but when I tried to play a sound, the media player told me that no sound device was available. I >noticed that redhat had the following line:
>alias sound-slot-0 audigy
>(which I had already commented out) so I made my alias for emu10k1 match:
>alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1

That is, i did add aliss sound emu10k1 to modules.conf, but did not add
alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1
nor did i look to comment out
alias sound-slot-0 audigy

Now can someone tell me if this could be the issue? What is slot 0 and slot 1 all about?
could it be that calling a slot "audigy" means to identify the front panel slot which i don't have (exists on the platenum audigy 2). so setting slot 0 to emu10k1 might use the port on the pci card at the back? hmm. i will try this and see.

The other things i did not do is the make menuconfig and make dep on the kernal modules. but i did not need to do this as all was as it should be re the emu10k1 docs and my system re this issue.

oh and i have not done anything with lines such as;
post-install emu10k1 /usr/local/etc/emu-script

I finally got it installed on RedHat 8.0. After doing a fresh install again (I'm getting pretty good at those :). I decided to run make for the emu10k1
download first to see what it says. It told me that it needed this file:

/lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/build/.config

it also told me for RedHat I could get the appropriate one at:

/lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/build/configs/

So I copied kernal-2.4.18-i686.config to

/lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/build/.config

after that "make" and "make install" ran successfully (no errors..nice clean output).

then I added the following to /etc/modules.conf

alias sound emu10k1

but when I tried to play a sound, the media player told me that no sound device was available. I noticed that redhat had the following line:
alias sound-slot-0 audigy

(which I had already commented out) so I made my alias for emu10k1 match:

alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1

now, the media player didn't complain and it went through the process of playing the file (you could see the timeline increase while it was "playing")...but
no sound. :(

finally I installed the emu-tools and added this line to the modules.conf file:

post-install emu10k1 /usr/local/etc/emu-script

no luck though :(

After reading through the "Open Discussion" instead of the "Help" forum at:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=146556

it's more obvious that Audigy 2 support is only in the latest source and not in the latest download. duh! After getting the latest source from CVS and compiling/installing,
I was able to get sound. WOOHOO! Note: I had to comment out the last line in modules.conf before the sound started working though.
#post-install emu10k1 /usr/local/etc/emu-script

here is the email regarding emu support of audigy 2

Hi Mat (only one t?),

I just went over the same headace. :)

You need to get the latest driver source from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/emu10k1

and compile it (you can't just get the latest download, you have get the
latest code from the CVS repository because the Audigy 2 support is only in
the latest source code).

This thread has a synopsis of what I had to do:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=815346&forum_id=146557

You can also check out the archives of another list I'm on to see some of my

That link ends up pointing to the same link I just replied to you earlier.
I've been running that version since it first came out.(0.20a)

And that's still not quite right with the Audigy 1. (Rear speakers are
Mirrored).

We'll just have to wait for an update I guess.

check out http://opensource.creative.com/ to see that audigy 2 is now meant
to be supported.

Yes, when installing different hardware which you have an onboard
equivalent. You MUST disable that device else it will cause problems.

As to "What should you do next??" Well, have you checked the site below to
see if the Audigy 2 support has been added??

http://sourceforge.net/projects/emu10k1

As I believe that this card is a little different to the Audigy 1. Which is
one reason I haven't gone out and bought an Audigy 2 yet. (Chipset is a
little different, but I haven't been able to get all the details yet.)

ok well as i mentioned in my email... i had already done this... although
part of my query was to know if i really had to. But the issue is that now
the audigy 2 is recognised, it does not work properly via the analog port.
i.e. i hear distorted sound from the digital port, but nothing from the 3rd
analog port emu-config -a does nothing to help. what should i do next?

For starters I would disable ALL references of the onboard Sound card in the
BIOS. EG: sound, midi and Game ports. I have to do the same with my Audigy
1. (Plus of course the onboard sound card will also takeup system resources
which will be best used by the Audigy 2 card.)

I have a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and have been trying to use the
latest cvs of emu10k1 to get it to work. I am almost there, but have one
question.

I can hear sound from the digital port through the analog speakers, but
cannot hear anything out of the analog port (3rd from the firewire port).

emu-config -a makes no difference.

Here i have posted my modules.conf file from /etc
and also the files in /usr/local/etc that relate to the audigy and the
emu10k1... these are scripts and the emu10k1 conf file

Note that I have onboard motherboard Intel AC'97 sound that seems to be
getting in the way as well, and the below shows how i tried to solve this by
disabling it on the BIOS.

Is there an issue with the drivers trying to access a port on the front case
that is normally found on the Audigy 2 Platenum ??... my audigy 2 does not
have this.

My history to get it to work thus far...

Have installed the kernel I wish to use along with the right kernel source.
In this case 2.4.18-24.8.0. so /usr/src has a symlink called linux-2.4 which
points to /usr/src/linux-2.4.18-24.8.0/. I also copied this to a symlink
called linux in the same dir as people mentioned this might be useful. so ls
on /usr/src is linux (a symlink to linux-2.4.18-24.8.0/) linux-2.4 (a
symlink to linux-2.4.18-24.8.0/) linux-2.4.18-24.8.0/

Have configured the modules as follows.
in /lib/modules i located config file in /lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/configs.
It was called kernel-2.4.18-i686.config. I copied this file to
/lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/ and called it .config as suggested by posts to
this list. (Although someone told me you should not have to do this).

Now I got the emu10k1 stuff from cvs and installed it using make all seemed
ok so i did make again, all seemed fine, so then make install make tools
make install-tools This all seemed fine

On rebooting my system, I found that there was no sound. The system was
trying to use the onboard sound which is an intel based AC'97 sound card. I
then set this to be disabled on the BIOS and rebooted getting a message
about missing hardware at startup.. on removing the configuration for this
device ... the boot process goes ok and that is where i start getting sound
out of the digital port.

I would like to know how to get sound from the normal port. I would also
like to know if it is a problem having the onboard sound device enabled with
the BIOS. I.e. i want to have it enabled but not to use it in linux because
I use it in another OS. what should i do for this?
