As you have an P. MMX processor you probably want to run an i586 kernel

Just stumbled over something:
is there an easy way to figure out for which processor a kernel was
compiled? I.e., on my laptop (Pentium MMX), I have
kernel-2.4.18-24.8.0.i386 and kernel-2.4.18-18.8.0.i586 .
uname -rmpi gives me
2.4.18-24.8.0 i586 i586 i386
and
2.4.18-18.8.0 i586 i586 i386
respectively, so that doesn't seem to be the way.
Looking into the /boot/config*'s for CONFIG_Mx86=y is not too elegant. Is there any other way?
