Just for the curious, can you do a rpm -q --whatprovides ppp Anyway, if all version are save you should be able to do a rpm -i --nodeps kernel Rebuilding the database might help, too (did you do it yet? it does not hurt!) rpm --rebuilddb If everything fails and you still are curious and not annoyed you might want to post on the RedHat RPM list (see https://listman.redhat.com). Otherwise remove ppp and install the kernel and ppp afterwards. You might have to remove some additional packages, but they are pulled in again by up2date ppp later on.
