The mailing list owner can set mailman to intercept administrative requests like unsubscribe in the subject, and s/he can set a maximum size for mails to the list (default is 40 kB), above the limit the mail is awaiting owner's approval. I do both for the mailing lists of the Linux Migration List which are run by mailman.
