Looks to me like you need to release/renew your address. C:> ipconfig /release c:> ipconfig /renew If your WAP is your router then your router should be setup for DHCP both server and client(the client would get the 24.x.x.x address unless this is static). Are you sure that 192.168.1.150 is hardcoded? That makes no sense why they would use 150 - it is not illegal just not the norm. After the above commands you should see: IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 The above assumes that you have DNS and DHCP on the same box - 192.168.1.1 You need to set the DHCP server should to release a scope of addresses (the above 100-x). Your client (XP Box) should do DNS lookups off of 192.168.1.1 This is kind of difficult to diagnose considering you haven't told us if this is for a home or office network, DHCP scope, DNS server location, etc. >From the XP box can you even ping the WAP or Gateway?????? -----Original Message----- From: psyche-list-admin@redhat.com [mailto:psyche-list-admin@redhat.com]On Behalf Of Levinshtein, Eyal Sent: Thursday, January 30, 2003 12:57 PM To: 'psyche-list@redhat.com' Subject: RE: Wireless Networking, no gateway, no DNS. Dave, Thanks for your reply, here is the scoop about the IP addressing. Let me know what you think. My external IP is 24.x.x.x The default Gateway is the Linksys router 192.168.1.1 LinkSys is configured for DHCP (Obtain IP, and DHCP Enabled.) The Lucent gets an IP 192.168.1.150 (Hard Coded) The Windows XP client was setup to obtain IP from the (Lucent AP-500) and it was assigned as follow: IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 169.254.93.100 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 167.206.3.207 167.206.7.4 When the access point was configured to obtain an IP (from the linksys router), the gateway and DSN were not supplied to the wireless client (in Windows XP). So, In windows, I had to hard code the IP, Gateway, DNS. I used the same setings in Linux as above but it doesnt want to work. Question: Should the Laptop be at 192.168.1.xx / 255.255.255.0 ? I am lost. With a gateway of 192.168.1.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, your IP address MUST be 192.168.x.x, where the x's are any number between 1 and 254. However, I would go so far as to recommend you change your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, and use an IP address of 192.168.1.x. Assuming that the driver modules are loading correctly (and it looks like they are), and that your wireless config (ad-hoc, channel, etc.) are correct, this should fix your problem. -- Dave Sherman MCSE, MCSA, CCNA "If we wanted you to understand it, we wouldn't call it code." > > I have a crazy problem with Redhat Linux 8.0 (psyche) > > I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop PII, 400mhz, 128mb of Ram. > > ---- > Background info: > > I have Windows XP installed and running with Wireless networking configured > and working. > > In Windows XP: > > >ipconfig /all > > Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-02-2D-08-15-AB > Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No > IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 169.254.93.100 > Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 > Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 > DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 167.206.3.207 > 167.206.7.4 > > The Access Point (Lucent AP-500) is connected to a (Linksys router > BEFSR411).
