Well, whatever it's doing it isn't only xmms that affected.  Even the 
default gnome cd player is wiped out too.  I tried another one and it 
couldn't play cd audio either.

Funny that it's only the cd audio that clobbered.  mpg's, wav's, and mp3's 
all play fine from disk.  The gnome mixer only wipes out the cd audio?
