To alwasy start gdm when the machine starts, edit /etc/inittab. Change 
the line "id:3:initdefault:" to "id:5:initdefault:". The number is the 
runlevel to start, where 3 is console, and 5 is X. This should do it 
unless I misunderstood the question?
