Based on my understanding of your post -- it sounds like you need to
configure sendmail to use a SMART_HOST. 

An example of how to enable this feature and recreate your
/etc/mail/sendmail.cf file is located in file /etc/mail/sendmail.mc. Search
for SMART_HOST.
