kernel-smp.i386 on a dual Athlon?

What kind of bizarre symptoms might I see if I was running with the
latest SMP kernel (2.4.18-19.8.0smp) compiled for i386, but running on
an AMD Athlon?

I've finally put the RIGHT kernel in place, but was wondering if some
of the nasty stuff I occasionally saw was a result of the mismatch.
