This is important, but may not be sufficient.  I had to explicitly run
xrdb in my .Xclients file in order to get my resources loaded.  IOW:

  xrdb -merge ~/.Xdefaults

The scripts that start X normally do this, but it seems that KDE
somehow manages to scrogg that...
