I had the same problem initially.  By default, Red Hat does not allow
DMA on for _some_ IDE CD-ROMs and DVDs.  To allow DMA to be turned on,
add this line to the /etc/modules.conf file:

options ide-cd dma=1 

It fixed my performance problems.
