XFT + xfs : needed?

Hi,
One question:
Back in RH6.x, RH shipped with xfs instead of X11 doing the font rendering itself. It made X11 faster.
Now, we have a new lib: Xft
Does it the same as the old way of doing things? I mean rendering in the application through a lib instead of a server like xfs?
Or should xfs be ported to Xft?

And another one:
Why do we need to dual config xfs+xft ? Couldn't they just share the config? Will xfs disappear?

And what if I drop xfs? Is it possible? Or at least the extra config dirs in xfs? I mean keeping just the misc/75/100 dpi fonts, dropping all Type1 and TTF ones.

Any comment?
