several screens for a laptop HOWTO ?

Hi, we have laptops (Compaq Armada M500), and we want two different displays:
either the internal LCD : 1024x768
OR plug the laptop in a dock, and use an external mouse, keybord AND LCD 
monitor 1280x1024 (also a compaq model).

I can't install RH8.0 so that both display can work without some manual 
XF86Config modifications. Is there a standard mechanism to handle such 
configurations ?
For example, calling  xf86config at boot time or when X is started ?
/etc/X11 seems to have some premilary infrastructure to handle several
modlines, but nothing functionnal.

Any help ?
