I don't understand this bit above. You should only need to install
the additional mp3 sub-packages for XMMS from freshrpms.net or
gurulabs. But if you demonstrated what your installation attempts
looks like on the command-line, maybe we can see the problem.

In that case, start the GUI from a terminal program like xterm or
konsole and see what error you get. Visit https://bugzilla.redhat.com
and see whethe it is a known bug. There you might also find
references to newer testing packages which fix that bug.
