That may not be what you need but try it and see what happens.  
Chances are that some of the menus and other headers won't appear
properly.  It's a KDE problem.  Some of the software just isn't designed
to be used in the Japanese user environment, and so isn't encoded for
Japanese.  However, this doesn't seem to be a problem with Bluecurve
from what I can tell.

What you call kanji gibberish is referred to as "Mojibake"
It's a common problem using Japanese in Linux. wrong language encoding
is what causes it.  I don't know in what you want to use Japanese for,
but to properly display email for example, you need to encode the body
of the text as well as the header to get all the mail to appear properly
in Japanese.

questions about Japanese input all the time and they won't often answer
questions if you aren't specific.
