I have found that mine crashes if I search for text and don't find anything. Haven't tried to figure out why. There is another way to search a pdf, use the /usr/bin/pdftotext program (part of the xpdf package) and pipe the result to grep: pdftotext <pdf-file> | grep <search-string>.
