Hrmm, possible, I suppose, but I suspect it is UTF-8 related. For example, 
make menuconfig when building a kernel (ncurses driven) fails when UTF-8 
is enabled.

What I did is change /etc/sysconfig/i18n, it's worth trying at any rate.

$ cat /etc/sysconfig/i18n
# LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
LANG="en_US"
SUPPORTED="en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en"
# SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"
SYSFONT="lat0-sun16"
