disk corruption

   o Fully up2dated RH 8.0 (2.4.18-18.8.0 kernel)
   o Dell C610 laptop
o Today at boot fsk complained about 'file system with errors'.
fsck then said: "Inode 25, i_size 2147483647, should be 49152. FIXED.
o When things came back up I found instead in addition to having
      "/opt/Local/" I also had "/opt/Local;" which contained a duplicate
of one of the subdis of /opt/Local but with an older date.
o best I can tell /opt/Local/ is in fact fine.
o All local filesystems run ext3.

o That said - I also booted windws 2000 today (to play a game with
my kids) and this occurred after that. I have run w2k but a handful
of times and it has had a quirk ever since I removed a vfat partition
and made it ext3 for more space on linux - when I boot win2k it
always complains that it would like to run chkdisk which I decline -
I have scrubbed the registry to no avail but can find no way to
stop it remembering the history of that partition. Since
this may be the cause and it may not be linux I am spelling out
     as much as I can.

     Did w2k do me in?

o I also have recollections of someone else mentioning duplicate
dirs after fsck but I could not find the thread - here or on
linux-kernel. I didn't see anything on bugzilla either.

   Regards,

    gene/
