Aside from all the posted (and valid :) reasons for not using a
"graphical boot up" screen (eg 'starting windows') I suggest you try
framebuffer mode.  Its not fully 'graphical' as such, but it can give
you a full sized text screen (eg 50 lines) for booting and for all your
consoles, which is much easier to work with.  Also, you get a nice
penguin watching over you boot messages!  Go to
