You could fall back to the tried and true xterm. I find xterm nicest when started with the following command line:

xterm -ls -sl 3000 -sb -vb -fg green -bg black -fn 6x10

You'll have to get used to using the middle mouse button to cut and paste, and learn about the <CNTL><mouse-button> combinations...
