Two common problems that result in 'service' not being in your path are:

a) Typing "su" or "su root" rather than "su -" or "su - root".
b) Using the Konsole "New Root Console" menu tab -- this can be corrected by editing the definition of that tab and changing the associated command from "su" to "su -".
