Well, you're wrong there.  In addition to ATI writing a large 
portion of the open source XFree86 drivers, ATI has binary only 
drivers available for download for the Radeon 8500, and FireGL 
8700 and 8800 on their website.  I've not tried them and have no 
idea how full featured or stable they might or might not be.

They are there however, and people do use them.
