That should establish the gateway.  The thing which is puzzling to me is 
why dhcp isn't establishing that as part of the lease establishment.  It 
almost looks as if the dhcp process is failing and we just aren't 
noticing.  I say that because the default DLink dhcp range is 100-150, 
whereas he is gettting a 192.168.1.3 address.  

Eric, you should be able to add the line:

GATEWAY=192.168.1.1 

to your ifcfg-eth0 file and have it work right.  I'm not sure why the 
NETWORK=192.168.1.0
line is there.  I would take that out also.
