I have 3 PCs all using the ATI Radeon 8500 LE 128MB video adapter. This card will work right out of the RH box in 2D mode. However 3D acceleration is another matter. At this moment DRI 3D operation is NOT supported in XFree86 4.2.x. DRI 3D support is slated to be provided when XFree86 4.3 is released (I think sometime in Jan. 2003).

If you are running kernel 2.4.18-14 I had luck running the ATI Fire GL drivers which reside at http://mirror.ati.com/support/drivers/linux/linuxradeon8500x420143.html for XFree86 4.2.0 and http://mirror.ati.com/support/drivers/linux/linuxradeon8500x410143.html for XFree86 4.1.0 and can be found as source RPMs fglr200-glc22-4.2.0-1.2.0.i586.rpm and fglr200-glc22-4.1.0-1.2.0.i586.rpm respectively. Compilation was required so it is necessary to have the kernel source tree available.

I tried to get the ATI drivers to compile with the RH kernel 2.4.18-17.8.0 source tree but kept getting a compilation failure. I didn't bother to attempt to fix the problem because I wasn't happy with the performance of the ATI 3D drivers anyhow. Tuxracer looked terrible albeit it ran. Instead I switched to the DRI-CVS tree for the XFree86 version of the Radeon 8500 3D drivers and compiled that up for use with the newest RH kernel 2.4.18-18.8.0. The performance of this development version is excellent which is making me look forward to XFree86 4.3 availability. My metric was once again tuxracer ... it looks and plays absolutely wonderfully. Of course the downside to using the DRI-CVS development version of the driver is that it is NOT without warts. When I log off my system it seems to go into power savings mode from which I can recover only by logging in from another machine and rebooting. I haven't figured out what is causing this problem and have ignored the issue for the time being. Otherwise, I have been quite happy with the performance of the Radeon 8500 LE with this driver.
