Problem with kernel ugrade & nVidia drivers

Hello. Using up2date I downloaded/installed kernel 2.4.18-18.8.0 (from
2.4.18-17.8.0) & its source files. On my current 2.4.18-17.8.0 setup I
installed nVidia 1.0-3.23 OpenGL drivers (works fine). Whenever I try
to boot into the 2.4.18-18.8.0 environment from LILO, X can not be
started. I go to root & when I try to compile the nVidia drivers from
instructions at www.osnews.com that pertain specifically to psyche (this
is how I compiled the working drivers I now have) I get an error at the
first command.

rpm -i NVIDIA*

this returns the following error message

"warning: user buildmeister does not exist - using root

I also got the same error when i went from the kernel on the redhat 8
discs, 2.4.18-14 to the current 2.4.18-17.8.0. I realized that I did
not have the source loaded for 2.4.18-14 & as soon as I did this , I was
able to upgrade. However, as noted above I did download the latest
kernel & its source files from redhat. Any help in this matter would be
greatly appreciated.

p.s. I have a stock redhat 8 install except for one thing. I used
Ximian magic-carpet to upgrade to the latest version of evolution ..1.2
& evolution only.
