Probably the best FAQ for any issue is a dedicated website for 
a package; Bugzilla (especially querying ALL tickets over 
time) is a close second; Mailing list archives rank high, and 
Google is always your friend, albeit rather unfocussed at 
times. <smile>

The RPM package website sub-section 'Hint 'n Kink' at: 
   http://www.rpm.org/hintskinks/repairdb/
has updated with still more explanation, and Michael's nice 
lead in Q and  form..
