No luck.  I downloaded the kernel-2.4.18-17.2.i686.rpm package,
installed it (using the --oldpackage flag, since I had already
upgraded to the -17.8.0 version of the kernel), and got very similar
results.  The only difference I noted was that the error message in
the dmesg output now reads "eth1: Error EERPOM read ffff" instead of
reading 0 as before.

If there are any further tests that I can run or information that I
can provide, just let me know how to proceed.  Thanks.
