I usually declare my default in the file /etc/sysconfig/network.

running ifcfg doesn't parse the
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-. It's in that file
that the default route is set.
If you are running ifcfg manually, you are thought to be savvy enough
to run 'route' manually as well. route add default
man ifcfg and route for more info.
