download and install a Java JRE (e.g. http://www.blackdown.org/), then
link the Java plugin from the JRE installation directory to Mozilla plugin
directory using a command something like the following:

ln -s /usr/local/java/j2sdk1.3.1-02b/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

then re-start Mozilla and check 'About plugins'. if you see the Java
plugin in the list just enable Java in Mozilla preferences and you should
be done.
