So I take it the redhat-config-network or redhat-config-devices n ow
actually works with modems ;-)

I tried on RedHat 7.3 to get it to work on 3 different computer and 4
different 3com external modem and while it recognised the modems, it
always failed to initialise them, 

I always ended up do it manually instead.

So I switched to broadband ;-)
