sound player for windows media format

I've been trying to listen to sports.yahoo.com radio broadcasts, which are
either in video/x-ms-asf format, or windows media format
(application/x-mplayer2).  Somewhere, I've read that video/x-ms-asf
should be supported by xanim, and windows media by mplayer. I've tried
using plugger-4.0 with xanim-2.80.0 (with vid_cvid_2.0_linuxELFx86.xa,
_cyuv_1.0, _h262_1.0, _h263_1.0, _iv32_2.1, _iv41_1.1, _iv50_1.0)  and
mplayer-0.90pre9-fr1 (alsaplayer version) and had no success. I've even
tried to right click on the file (http://help.yahoo.com/help
/us/bcst/bcst-14.html) and run it directly with the program, but get
nothing. I've tested xanim and mplayer at the command line by running a
sound file on them, so know they work.

Can anyone suggest a course to success?
