Yup, works fine, use this every time I reinstall my system, to restore, I generally am careful, I tend to run tar xvfz backup-file.tgz in a temp directory and then copy my real data, and things like my mozilla and/or evolution profile etc manually back to my home directory as between two different system types or versions one probably should keep a few new .xxxx config files.
