Hmm

I have had similar experiences. Reverse DNS is correct but remote 
connections only work if there is an entry in /etc/hosts.

I installed the RPMs from mysql.com -  MySQL-3.23.53a-1.i386.rpm and it 
works fine without any entries in /etc/hosts. One difference is that 
the mysql.com RPM installs init.d/mysql which is quite a bit different 
from the RedHat's init.d/mysqld.
