This could be because of postfix not having read access to /etc/shadow
As you might be knowing postfix does not start with root privileges

The alternatives are 

1. not using /etc/shadow 
2. Changing /etc/shadow mode to 644  ( both of these might not good ideas. )
 
3. Authentication using NIS / LDAP etc... 

We configured using LDAP authentication.
