Thanks for the replies, but your all telling me how to accomplish this 
under Gnome...I'm running KDE and need to figure out how to enable it 
under KDE...thanks!

Under preferences:///, Font (or run gnome-font-properties)

the bottom half is for Font Rendering. Lower right is
"Subpixel smothing (LCDs)".
Click the "Details ..." button, and you get finer control.

The 4 choices on the main panel are default combinations
of the choices on the detail page.

NOTE: Subpixel rendering only works for LCDs, and it depends
on the order of the pixels on the screen. Try different
setting to get the one that looks best to you.
