Under preferences:///, Font (or run gnome-font-properties) the bottom half is for Font Rendering. Lower right is "Subpixel smothing (LCDs)". Click the "Details ..." button, and you get finer control. The 4 choices on the main panel are default combinations of the choices on the detail page. NOTE: Subpixel rendering only works for LCDs, and it depends on the order of the pixels on the screen.
