You also might want to try adding lines to ~/.mplayer/config.  I got
tired of adding -vo and -ao options everytime I played something so my
config file is

  # Write your default config options here!

  # Use SDL video driver by default
  vo=sdl

  # Use the SDL audio driver
  ao=sdl:esd

  # Start full screen by default
  fs=1
