  Okay folks you guys are over thinking this.  If all you want to do is 
wipe out a linux, and there is nothing else on the disk .  Just wipe the 
mbr and partition table and be done with it.

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/$device count=1024

Where $device = your drive.   (IE sda , or hda)
