Why do you have such a file > when you use LILO instead of GRUB? I have a system with lilo (grub won't work) It is a full install, noit an upgrade, and I chose lilo instead of grub. Anaconda still created /boot/grub/grub.conf. I did rpm -ivh kernel* and it worked fine. I think the new installkernel routine uses the current default stanza in grub.conf to create the new one in grub.conf and lilo,.conf.
