startx hangs, sgi_fam errors in log

Hi,

I am wondering what to do about the following:

I have upgraded from RH7.2 to RH8.0 on three machines. I noticed some
would hang at startx. In some cases, if portmap is listed as allowed in
/etc/hosts.allow, then startx will hang unless I also put in a line
allowing fam:ALL. If I remove the portmap:127.0.0.1 line from
/etc/hosts.allow, then I can also remove the fam:ALL line. fam:127.0.0.1
doesn't solve the startx hanging problem. In /var/log/secure, it shows
multiple failures of fam from an <unknown address>.

In messages xinetd complains about "transport endpoint not connected".

I have seen various references to this problem in different mailing list
archives, but I have not seen any solutions mentioned so far.

Thanks for any insight, Bill Wraith
