x startup splash screen

Upon xwindows startup, there is a splash screen that displays icons along
the bottom. If I have an application set to run at startup, the splash
screen stays on the screen until I start some other application. If I
remove the applications to automatically start, the splash screen
disappears fairly quickly. It doesn't matter if I start the app
backgrounded with & or not. The system is stock 8.0 with updates as
they've become available. Default Bluecurve theme.

Any clue what's going on?
