Just to keep you informed on this thread, I got this from my postmaster
today:

The comment posted to the list that the name doesn't resolve is
partially correct - there are no A records for dsl.pipex.com (since it
is a domain and not a single machine).  There are, however MX records
which are used to determine where mail gets delivered to for that
domain.  An A record would only be needed if the MX record were not
present.  However, all this is irrelevant, as dial.pipex.com also has
no A record and that works.

I'll try prodding a few more addresses at Redhat to see if I can get
any further with this.
