They don't ship an SMP kernel for i586, which it appears that you
have.  They did ship such a kernel with 7.3.  It is still possible to
build an SMP i586 kernel from the SRPM, but this is turned off by
default.  I don't know why.

You can always keep the old kernel; it should run just fine.  There's
not all that much difference between 2.4.18-10 from 7.3 and 2.4.18-14
from 8.0.
