You can but first you have switch in BIOS a funny named memory
option (I do not remember what is the name precisely) to 8MB from
a default 1MB.

I am typing that sitting in front of Acer TravelMate 230 which is
pretty similar in most characteristcs to 280 and in particular has
the same video.

It does have RH9 installed and is using 1024x768 in 24 bit depth.

To some extent it does work, but not very well, and you need
'apm=broken-psr' boot parameter as battery checks are broken on
BIOS level.  Likely you need ACPI support for a full functionality.
