To get this to work under RH 9 I had to download the source and comment out line 336 of the synaptics.c file. The rpm did not work for me.
Also, despite what the --help says, the -t option doesn't work; to turn off the tapping you need to specify the option --tapmode=0.

Man, definitely post any solution you come up with! I've got a Dell
L400 which I love, except for this "feature". Drives me crazy.
A search of Google for "synaptics linux rpm" turned up http://www.compass.com/synaptics/ as the very first entry.
