Either your applications are not specifying a font encoding, in 
which case *any* encoding is valid including Unicode 
(ISO10646-1), or the font chosen/configured in the app is 
Unicode.

The solution is to reconfigure the application and specify the 
proper encoding for the fonts you're using ie: ISO8859-1
