--------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Hat, Inc. Red Hat Security Advisory Synopsis: Updated fileutils package fixes race condition in recursive operations Advisory ID: RHSA-2003:015-05 Issue date: 2003-01-21 Updated on: 2003-02-12 Product: Red Hat Linux Keywords: rm move gnu mv remove Cross references: Obsoletes: CVE Names: CAN-2002-0435 --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Topic: New fileutils packages for Red Hat Linux 6.2, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3 fix a race condition in recursive remove and move commands. 2. Relevant releases/architectures: Red Hat Linux 6.2 - i386 Red Hat Linux 7.0 - i386 Red Hat Linux 7.1 - i386 Red Hat Linux 7.2 - i386, ia64 Red Hat Linux 7.3 - i386 3. Problem description: The fileutils package includes a number of GNU versions of common and popular file management utilities. A race condition in the recursive use of 'rm' and 'mv' in fileutils 4.1 and earlier could allow local users to delete files and directories (as the user running fileutils) if the user has write access to part of the tree being moved or deleted. Red Hat Linux versions 6.2, 7, 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3 shipped with versions of fileutils that are vulnerable to this issue. This erratum provides new fileutils packages that contain a patch correcting this issue. 4. Solution: Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied. To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run: rpm -Fvh [filenames] where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the desired RPMs. Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command: up2date This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system. 5.
