I suggest you to read the licences the software you want to modify is published under (in the case of kudzu the license is GPL). Among other things GPL says that you can't alter the copyright notices and every modification to the original source tree must contain a notification that is not part of the original source and the author of the original program has no responsability for this modifications and the way it work. Also, changing the copyright notice is not right: you asume that software is copyrighted by you or your company and it is not.
